The NEBOSH International General Certificate is made up of two key units: GIC1 – Management of Health and Safety and GIC2 – Risk Assessment.

Unit GIC1: Management of Health and Safety

This unit focuses on the principles of managing health and safety in the workplace. Learners will explore why health and safety should be managed, how effective management systems work, and how organisations can monitor and improve safety performance.

The unit includes:

• Element 2: How health and safety management systems work and what they look like
• Element 3: Managing risk — understanding people and processes
• Element 4: Health and safety monitoring and measuring

Unit GIC2: Risk Assessment

This unit focuses on identifying workplace hazards and understanding how risks can be controlled. Learners will look at a wide range of common workplace issues and how they can affect health, safety and wellbeing.

The unit includes:

• Element 5: Physical and psychological health
• Element 6: Musculoskeletal health
• Element 7: Chemical and biological agents
• Element 8: General workplace issues
• Element 9: Work equipment
• Element 10: Fire
• Element 11: Electricity

Together, these units provide learners with the knowledge and practical understanding needed to manage workplace health and safety effectively and complete a workplace-based risk assessment.

How is the NEBOSH International General Certificate assessed?

The NEBOSH International General Certificate is assessed through two separate assessments, one for each unit.

Unit IG1: Management of Health and Safety — Open Book Exam

The IG1 assessment is completed online as an open book examination. Learners are given a realistic workplace scenario and must answer a series of questions based on the information provided.

The assessment includes:

• Format: Online open book exam
• Duration: 24 hours to complete and submit
• Content: Scenario-based questions linked to real workplace situations
• Pass mark: A minimum of 45 marks is required

Unit IG2: Risk Assessment — Practical Assessment

The IG2 assessment is a practical risk assessment, usually completed in the learner’s own workplace or a suitable workplace environment.

The assessment includes:

• Format: Workplace-based practical risk assessment
• Content: Identification of hazards, assessment of risk, existing controls, further control measures and an action plan
• Grading: Pass or Refer

NEBOSH International General Certificate grading

The overall qualification grade is based on the learner’s result for the IG1 open book exam.

• Pass: 45–64 marks
• Credit: 65–74 marks
• Distinction: 75 marks or above

To achieve the NEBOSH International General Certificate, learners must pass both the IG1 and IG2 assessments.

• Contribute to the development of safe systems of work, including emergency arrangements, and understand when permit-to-work systems may be required for higher-risk activities.
• Take part in workplace incident investigations and help identify causes and lessons learned.
• Support their employer in reviewing the effectiveness of the health and safety management system through monitoring, audits and management reviews.
