Ideal for managers and supervisors working outside the UK, the NEBOSH General Certificate is a globally recognised qualification for those working in, or progressing into, the health and safety industry.
The NEBOSH HSE Certificate in Manual Handling Risk Assessment has been developed in partnership with Great Britain’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
The course is designed to help you identify, assess and effectively manage manual handling risks in the workplace. It provides practical guidance on recognising hazardous manual handling activities, evaluating the level of risk and prioritising suitable control measures to help protect workers from injury.
You will also learn how to use the HSE’s recognised manual handling assessment tools, including the Manual Handling Assessment Charts (MAC) and the Risk Assessment of Pushing and Pulling (RAPP) tool. The course also develops your understanding of what makes a manual handling risk assessment suitable and sufficient.
NEBOSH is a globally recognised awarding organisation specialising in health, safety and environmental qualifications. According to the 2025 NEBOSH Jobs Barometer, more than 85% of UK health and safety job roles analysed specifically referenced a NEBOSH qualification, with the National General Certificate appearing in 61% of vacancies. This demonstrates the strong recognition NEBOSH qualifications continue to receive from UK employers.
Whether you are already working in health and safety or looking to develop your knowledge and career prospects, this qualification provides practical skills that can be applied directly within the workplace.

The NEBOSH Unit MHR1: Assessing Manual Handling Risk is made up of three key elements:
Principles of Manual Handling
Explore why manual handling should be avoided where possible and understand the moral, legal and business reasons for effectively managing manual handling risks. You will also look at the common types of injuries and ill health that can result from poor manual handling practices.
Managing Manual Handling Risk – Identification of Risk
Learn how to identify the key risk factors associated with manual handling activities. You will also develop an understanding of how to use the HSE’s recognised assessment tools, including the Manual Handling Assessment Charts (MAC) and Risk Assessment of Pushing and Pulling (RAPP), and what is required to make a risk assessment suitable and sufficient.
Managing Manual Handling Risk – Control of Risk
Learn how manual handling risks can be eliminated or reduced through suitable control measures, including the use of mechanical aids and equipment. You will also develop your understanding of good manual handling techniques and how these can help reduce the risk of injury.
A practical assessment is completed at the end of the course.
You will watch a video of a workplace manual handling activity and be asked to assess the task using the relevant HSE tools and templates. This allows you to demonstrate your understanding of manual handling risk assessment and how to apply the techniques covered during the course.
Further information about the assessment is available within the course syllabus and assessment guidance documents.
Please note: All course materials and certificates are sent by post. Additional postage charges may apply for learners based outside the UK. Where applicable, we will contact you after booking to confirm the delivery cost.

Completed the NEBOSH Managing Stress course online with SM Safety Training & Consultancy Ltd. This course was a lot more straight forward and easy compared to the other courses, would recommend completing the NEBOSH General first. However, the instructor kept the trainees engaged, the impact showed as the exam results were high for all.Posted on Google andrew duncanTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. having done the NEBOSH General course previously with the guys at SM and knowing the way they work made this course much easier to take in, Steve was very good at adapting the learning style to how I take in the knowledge.
