If you are considering a career in health and safety, taking on greater responsibility at work, or looking for a recognised qualification to support your next career move, the NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety is likely to be one of the qualifications you have come across.

But what should you actually expect from the NEBOSH General Certificate?

How difficult is the course? What will you learn? How are GNC1 and GNC2 assessed? How much studying is involved? And, most importantly, is the NEBOSH General Certificate worth doing?

At SM Safety Training & Consultancy Ltd, we deliver the NEBOSH National General Certificate to learners from a wide variety of backgrounds, including managers, supervisors, health and safety professionals, people changing careers, serving Armed Forces personnel, service leavers and veterans.

This guide explains what you can expect before, during and after your NEBOSH General Certificate course.

What Is the NEBOSH National General Certificate?

The NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety is one of the best-known occupational health and safety qualifications in the UK.

It is designed to give learners a strong understanding of how health and safety should be effectively managed within an organisation.

Rather than simply learning legislation or memorising information, you will develop the ability to understand workplace risks, identify hazards, recommend proportionate controls and explain how effective health and safety management contributes to an organisation.

The qualification sits at SCQF Level 6, which is comparable to RQF Level 3 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

NEBOSH states that more than 200,000 people hold the National General Certificate, demonstrating how established the qualification has become within the health and safety profession.

Who Is the NEBOSH General Certificate For?

One of the biggest advantages of the NEBOSH General Certificate is that it is not restricted to one particular industry.

It is suitable for people working across almost every type of organisation.

Typical learners include:

  • Health and Safety Officers
  • Health and Safety Advisors
  • Managers
  • Supervisors
  • Team Leaders
  • Facilities Managers
  • Project Managers
  • HR professionals
  • Operations Managers
  • Engineers
  • Construction professionals
  • People responsible for workplace risk assessments
  • People looking to start a career in health and safety
  • Serving military personnel preparing for resettlement
  • Service leavers and veterans moving into civilian employment

NEBOSH identifies managers, supervisors, people with health and safety responsibilities and those beginning a health and safety career as key audiences for the qualification.

You do not need to already work as a Health and Safety Advisor to take the course.

In fact, many learners complete their NEBOSH General Certificate specifically because they want to make that transition.

Is the NEBOSH General Certificate Suitable for Military Service Leavers?

Absolutely.

Health and safety can be a very natural career progression for people leaving the Armed Forces.

Military environments are highly process-driven. Service personnel already work with risk assessments, safe systems of work, procedures, supervision, equipment, training, incident reporting, leadership and accountability.

The challenge is often not a lack of experience, it is understanding how that experience translates into civilian health and safety terminology.

SM Safety Training & Consultancy Ltd is veteran-led. Founder Steven Mullan served for 24 years in the military before moving into health and safety and establishing the business.

That experience allows us to help military learners recognise that much of what they have already been doing throughout their careers is directly relevant to health and safety.

We help translate military language and experience into civilian health and safety language, helping learners both understand the qualification and prepare themselves for employment on Civvy Street.

Serving personnel may also be able to use Enhanced Learning Credits (ELC) towards eligible training. SM Safety Training & Consultancy Ltd is an ELCAS Approved Learning Provider, Provider Number 13802.

Do You Need Any Previous Qualifications?

There are no formal entry requirements for the NEBOSH National General Certificate.

However, learners need a suitable standard of written English because they must understand the course material and clearly explain and apply their knowledge during the assessments.

NEBOSH recommends an English standard equivalent to IELTS 6.0 or higher.

You don’t need years of previous health and safety experience.

What you do need is a willingness to learn, participate, study and understand how the principles taught during the course apply within real workplaces.

What Will You Learn on the NEBOSH General Certificate?

The NEBOSH General Certificate is designed to develop both your knowledge and your ability to apply that knowledge.

You will develop an understanding of areas including:

  • Why health and safety should be managed
  • Health and safety management systems
  • Leadership and organisational responsibilities
  • Health and safety culture
  • Consultation and communication
  • Risk assessment
  • Workplace hazards
  • Workplace transport
  • Work equipment
  • Fire
  • Electricity
  • Manual handling
  • Hazardous substances
  • Physical and psychological health
  • Incident investigation
  • Monitoring and measuring health and safety performance
  • Identifying suitable workplace controls
  • Developing action plans

NEBOSH describes the qualification as focusing on effective health and safety management, identifying and controlling common workplace hazards, measuring performance and understanding key UK legal requirements.

The important point is that you are not simply learning definitions.

You are learning how to apply health and safety principles in the real world.

How Is the NEBOSH General Certificate Structured?

Under the current specification, the qualification consists of two units:

GNC1 – Managing Health and Safety

GNC1 assesses your understanding of health and safety management through a scenario-based digital open book assessment.

You are presented with a workplace scenario and a series of tasks.

The questions are designed to determine whether you can take what you have learned during the course and apply it appropriately to the situation you have been given.

There is also a closing interview where you may be asked questions about your submission.

GNC2 – Risk Assessment

GNC2 is the practical element of the qualification.

You will complete a workplace risk assessment and develop an appropriate action plan.

This allows you to demonstrate that you can identify hazards, evaluate risk, prioritise improvements and recommend appropriate control measures.

NEBOSH estimates approximately three hours for this practical assessment.

This combination is one of the strengths of the qualification.

GNC1 assesses what you know and how you apply it.

GNC2 assesses what you can do.

Is the NEBOSH General Certificate Open Book?

GNC1 is assessed using a scenario-based open book digital assessment.

But don’t make the mistake of thinking that “open book” means “easy”.

It doesn’t.

You are not simply looking up answers in a textbook.

The assessment is designed to test your ability to:

  • Read and understand a workplace scenario
  • Interpret what the question is asking
  • Select relevant technical knowledge
  • Apply that knowledge to the scenario
  • Explain your reasoning
  • Produce structured, relevant answers

Learners have a 24-hour window to access, complete and submit the GNC1 digital assessment.

Good preparation and examination technique therefore matter just as much as understanding the course material.

At SM Safety Training, assessment preparation forms an important part of the learning process. We want learners to understand not only the subject but also how to demonstrate that knowledge effectively when answering NEBOSH questions.

How Difficult Is the NEBOSH General Certificate?

The NEBOSH General Certificate is a challenging professional qualification, but it is absolutely achievable with the right training, preparation and support.

One of the biggest mistakes a learner can make is assuming that simply attending the course will be enough.

You should expect to:

  • Participate during lessons
  • Review your notes
  • Complete additional reading
  • Practise applying your knowledge
  • Attempt sample questions
  • Develop your assessment technique
  • Ask questions when you are unsure
  • Prepare thoroughly for GNC1 and GNC2

NEBOSH currently specifies a minimum of 66 taught hours and approximately 40 hours of private study and background reading for the qualification.

The more you engage with the material, the easier it becomes to recognise how the different areas of health and safety connect.

How Long Does the NEBOSH General Certificate Course Take?

NEBOSH confirms that fast-track learners can complete the taught element of the qualification in 10 working days.

At SM Safety Training & Consultancy Ltd, our scheduled NEBOSH General Certificate courses are delivered live through Microsoft Teams, normally over 10 training days.

This gives learners the benefit of tutor-led training and interaction without having to travel to a training centre.

Will the NEBOSH General Certificate Help My Career?

The NEBOSH General Certificate can provide an important foundation for a career in occupational health and safety.

Depending on your previous experience, opportunities may include roles such as:

  • Health and Safety Coordinator
  • Health and Safety Officer
  • Health and Safety Advisor
  • SHE Advisor
  • HSEQ Coordinator
  • Compliance Officer
  • Safety Coordinator

Remember that a qualification alone does not automatically make somebody competent for every health and safety role.

Experience matters too.

However, the General Certificate can give you recognised underpinning knowledge and help you demonstrate to employers that you are serious about developing your health and safety career.

You may also find our guide on becoming a Health and Safety Officer or Advisor useful when considering your next steps.

Can the NEBOSH General Certificate Lead to IOSH Membership?

Yes, subject to IOSH’s full membership requirements.

The NEBOSH National General Certificate meets the academic requirements for Technical Membership of IOSH (TechIOSH) when combined with the appropriate practical health and safety experience.

IOSH currently requires applicants for Technical Membership to hold an appropriate Level 3–5 occupational safety and health qualification and have at least one year of practical health and safety experience, alongside maintaining CPD.

This can make the qualification an important early step for people who want to build a professional career within occupational safety and health.

What Can I Study After the NEBOSH General Certificate?

The General Certificate does not need to be the end of your development.

Once you have built your foundation, you can specialise or progress further depending on your career.

At SM Safety Training, progression options include:
